EIGHT PLATES.
EIGHT WINES.
ONE HAPPY TEAM
The kinds of evenings that feel borrowed from a better life — unhurried and stitched together by the right people at the right table. Casa do Calhau is one of those rare places. Eight seats, eight wines, eight plates. No grand performance needed. Just Leopoldo cooking with a generosity that sits somewhere between rural Alentejo and every typical mediterranian family kitchen.
We gathered our team, who knows how to dress for the occasion: denim softened by years of wear, a corduroy suit with its gentle winter confidence, wool blazers, flannel shirts, and a discreet army of cashmere socks warming the floorboards.
Leopoldo welcomed us the way he always does: gracefully, like someone opening not a restaurant, but his actual home. Because that’s precisely what Casa do Calhau is (translated as "Home of Calhau" - the chef's surname). Not a dining room, but a lived-in space where the borders between guest and friend fade somewhere between courses.
Plates came one after the other, as if nudged forward by an invisible rhythm. Wines followed, each one with its own story. The room glowed in that warm way that only exists when no one is performing and everyone is simply present. Recycled wool on the shoulders, a couple of bottles yet to be opened. Cherish the day.
How good does it feel to simply let a meal stretch? These are the nights that remind us why we care so much about details. The organic fabrics, the textures, the people, the local craft. Spaces that honour time and quality, and the hands that shape them.
Turns out a perfect evening only needs a table, a handful of good friends, and Leopoldo working his quiet magic in the kitchen. Thank you for having us in such a familiar setting.
