HISTORY OF THE
As the ultimate menswear staple, the Oxford Shirt has been around many wardrobes for over a century. The Shirt is named after the prestigious Oxford University, where the fabric was first used in the late 19th century by cotton mills in Scotland who began weaving a unique cloth made of a mixture of dyed and undyed threads. This new fabric was initially known as "Oxford Cloth," which was a finely woven, lightweight and durable material with a basketweave pattern, and it quickly gained popularity among students, who appreciated its durability and easy care.
FROM THE ORIGINAL SPORTS
JERSEY TO TODAY
In the early 20th century, the Oxford shirt was first designed for polo players who needed a comfortable and breathable shirt that allowed them to move freely. It became a favorite among college students in the United States as part of the Ivy League style, and later among the general public due to its simple design and well-put-together look. The Oxford shirt has evolved to include a range of styles, colors, and patterns, and its button-down collar - originally designed to keep the collar from flapping in the wind during sports - adds a touch of formality, making it suitable for a wide range of occasions.
Today, the Oxford shirt remains a classic wardrobe staple for men, associated with a clean, classic look that is both versatile and timeless.
FOUNDATION OF THE
OXFORD AT ISTO.
Followed by the Classic T-Shirt, the Oxford Shirt was our second ever attempt at developing a timeless and essential garment. Back in 2017, high-quality, seasonless design and fine organic fabrics were already part of our DNA. So, our take on this iconic piece had to be made with the best garment supplier and tailor in Portugal (and, who knows, in the World): Somelos and DOCAS Confecções.
OUR TAKE ON THE
From a heavy 175 g/sqm organic cotton cloth (GOTS Certified) that manages to feel light and breathable when worn, our Oxford Shirt is unrivalled in its attention to detail, from cuffs to buttons, and sewing. Measure wise, we looked for a perfect intersection between a classical fit and a slimmer design. Perfectly paired with some Chinos and a Work Jacket, our Oxford Shirt transcends seasons, as it fits any men's wardrobe all year long.
