INSIDE MANTECO:
WHERE OLD WOOL
BECOMES NEW

Earlier this year, we made our way to Montemurlo, a small town near Florence, with nothing more than a production meeting on the agenda. What we found was far from “just business.”
It was an educational lesson in craftsmanship, sustainability, and innovation — a front-row seat to the future of the industry, where old wool gets a second life and color recipes are invented on a daily.

Manteco is not a standard mill. Established in 1943, they started out repurposing surplus military goods in post-war Italy, transforming blankets and uniforms into premium recycled wool. No chemicals. Just pure ingenuity.

Today, they’re still leading that charge with MWool®, the next generation recycled wool. It’s the fabric behind our Wool Coat, Midweight & Heavy Wool Jackets, Wool Trousers and Caps. And we’re not stopping there.

One of the highlights of our visit was witnessing the Recype® color creation process in action. Imagine mixing paint, but with fibers. If you want a new color, you simply combine percentages of existing shades until you get the tone. It’s circularity at its most creative. Each mix results in a rainbow of wool, entirely undyed, made from what already exists.

Manteco produces up to 9.5 million meters of fabric per year, but always with a sharp focus on reducing impact, maximizing reuse, and pushing the boundaries of what circular fashion can be. Our day in Montemurlo reminded us why we do what we do: to create garments with stories, substance, and a lighter footprint.
